Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition: The ability to feel what others are feeling and the action of trying to help them with their troubles.  In short:  Feel what others feel. Summary: “The Paper Crane” is based on an ancient Japanese folktale about a restaurant owner whose business is about to fold due to a new highway that makes it hard for customers to go out of their way to get to the restaurant. One day the business owner’s unfortunate circumstances change when a mysterious, gentle, ragged man stops by for a meal and is treated with great compassion and respect. The owner is surprised by a very special magical gift from the old man - a paper crane that turns into a real dancing crane. The restaurant owner’s kindness toward the stranger brings good fortune - his business is now booming, as customers come from all over to see the beautiful crane.    Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students will be motivated to show more kindness towards others, especially those who have unfortunate circumstances.
  2. Teachers reinforce the motto, “kindness is rewarded,” with class discussions about the importance of small acts of kindness, especially toward those who are needy.
  Guiding Questions:
  1. What happened to make it more difficult for customers to come to the restaurant?
  2. What was it like when no more customers came to the restaurant?
  3. Finally, a customer comes into the restaurant. Who is he and how is he treated by the owner?
  4. What does he do to show gratitude to the restaurant owner?
  5. When the owner clapped his hands what happened to the paper crane?
  6. What brought customers back to the restaurant?
  7. Do you think it’s a good thing to treat all people with kindness, even an old man in ragged clothes? Why or why not?
  8. What does this saying mean to you, “kindness is rewarded”?
  9. Make a list of 10  “Acts of Kindness” you could do at home, in your community and at school. Then do them!
  10. Have you ever made a paper crane or some kind of origami? Try to find someone who can teach you how.
