Definition: The ability to feel what others are feeling and the action of trying to help them with their troubles.    In short:  Feel what others feel.

Summary: This book is a poem celebrating the diversity within the human family. In one classroom you will see kids of all sizes and colors, eating a variety of food, speaking different languages, all enjoying time together. “We’re part of a community, our strength is our diversity, a shelter from adversity, all are welcome here.”   Guiding Questions: 
  1. If someone asks you what this book is about, what would you say? 
  2. Would you like to be in a classroom like this one, with kids from all over the world? Is your school like this? 
  3. What if everyone was the same, the same color skin, hair, weight, height, voice, interests, and so on, exactly the same? Would you like that or not and why? 
  4. Have you ever tried food that is not from your country? What did you eat and where was it from? Did you like it? 
  5. Have you ever listened to music that is performed by people from a country different from your own? How did you like it? 
  6. What does the word “diversity” mean? What does it mean when the author talks about diversity being a good thing? 
  7. What does the word “adversity” mean? If you don’t know, ask someone. 
  8. On one of the pages of this book, there are flags from many countries. Can you identify any of the flags?
  9. Have you ever visited another country? If so, where did you go and what was it like? If not, is there a country you’d like to visit, and why would you like to go there?
  10. Do you think if everyone got to know one another and became friends that there would be peace in this world?
