Before, During & After Reading

Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition: Patience means having self-control, waiting and enduring when one would rather not. In short: Stay calm while you wait. Summary: A young rabbit begins her story by describing the kinds of predicaments that make her angry. She says that angry feelings can’t hurt anyone, but doing something to express that anger can. She accepts that some difficult situations can’t be changed, some can, and there are actions she can take to make things better. This wise rabbit ends her story with a very empowering thought: “When I feel angry I know what to do!”    Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students are empowered to use a healthy approach when they get angry. They gain self-awareness through teacher-led discussions that help them identify what makes them angry. They are less likely to react by hitting or breaking something, and more inclined to use some of the techniques in the book to assuage the angry emotions.
  Guiding Questions:
  1. How old do you think the girl rabbit is?
  2. Name three things that make her angry.
  3. Do you agree that some of the things that make her angry are not fair? Why?
  4. What does she feel like doing when she’s angry?
  5. “Feeling can’t hurt anyone or get me into trouble but doing can.” What does this mean?
  6. What does she do to help calm herself down when she feels like saying or doing something mean?
  7. Pick the action that will calm you down the most and explain why that one works best:  (a) ask someone to help you, (b) ride a bike, or do something active, ( c ) take deep breaths, (d) rest or cry, (e) something else that isn’t on this list.
  8. Make a list of three things that often make you angry.
  9. Make a plan and write it down: The next time I’m angry I will ___________________ and that will help me calm down.
  10. Ask yourself, do I make anyone angry? If the answer is yes, try to do something about it to make things better between you and that person.
