Definition: Patience means having self-control, waiting and enduring when one would rather not. In short: Stay calm while you wait. Summary: This is a humorous story about Nellie, a girl who doesn’t listen to her teacher when she is told not to stick her finger in her nose. When Nellie's finger gets stuck, people in the community try to help her, but nothing works until Nellie’s brother Henry solves the problem!  Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students demonstrate more self-control and willingness to follow directions after teacher guided discussions about why that’s important. 
Guiding Questions: 
  1. What kind of competition did Nelly win? 
  2. What did Nelly do that got her in trouble? 
  3. Can you name three people who tried and failed to help Nellie get unstuck? 
  4. Henry keeps telling Nelly he can help her, but no one listens. Why do you think no one listens to him? 
  5. What do you think Nelly learned from this experience? 
  6. How do you think Henry felt when he was the only one who could help Nelly? What did he do to solve the problem? 
  7. Don’t do that - share about a time when someone has said this to you and why they said it.  
  8. Did you ever get into trouble when someone told you not to do something and you did it anyway? 
  9. Share about a time when you told someone - don’t do that. What happened? 
  10. What does the word “self-control” mean? Do you think you have a lot of self-control or not so much?
