Definition: A friendship occurs when two or more people are able to experience respect, trust, and kindness in their relationship.  In short: Build bonds that last forever. Summary:  Teachers note: this classic story can be enjoyed by children of all ages. This classic story, published in book format in 1922,  is about a friendship between a boy and a velveteen rabbit. The rabbit wonders about what it means to become real. He is told by another toy, a horse, “When a child loves you for a long, long time, you become real.” The rabbit becomes the boy’s favorite toy, spends a lot of time with him, and is declared “real” by his owner. Magic happens through which the velveteen rabbit is changed into a real rabbit with hind legs, soft and shiny fur, and the ability to leap around and live together with other rabbits. The love the boy gave to his rabbit made him real.    Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students will invest more in their friendships and relationships because they understand the importance of cherishing others, especially family members and close friends. 
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. This story has been popular since 1922. Why do you think “The Velveteen Rabbit” has been enjoyed by children of all ages for over a century?  
  2. What was the desire of the toy rabbit? 
  3. How did the boy show his love for his toy rabbit? 
  4. The rabbit eventually was declared “real” by the boy. We know it didn’t become a live rabbit so what did that mean?
  5. Why was the rabbit taken away from the boy? 
  6. Describe what happened when the boy saw rabbits in the woods.
  7. What did you learn about friendship from this story? 
  8. Have you ever talked to your toys or imagined them talking to you (maybe when you were little)? If so, describe what it was like for you. 
  9. Did you ever have a favorite toy that you liked to take everywhere with you? If so, describe it. 
  10. Ask your parents or grandparents question # 9.
