Definition: Patience means having self-control, waiting and enduring when one would rather not. In short: Stay calm while you wait. Summary: Louis is an elephant who is learning about his big emotions. One by one, the personified emotions of anger, sadness, frustration, and happiness visit Louis. Louis learns how to identify and work with these emotions instead of being overwhelmed. When he is able to understand and work with his emotions, there’s much more time for fun. Lesson Objectives: 
  1. As students learn more about their emotions, they demonstrate more confidence in naming and dealing with them instead of being overwhelmed. 
  2. This story only covers a few emotions. Teachers can guide students to be able to name and understand additional emotions, such as fear, confusion, excitement, hope, disappointment, guilt, jealousy, love.  
Guiding Questions: 
  1. What does Louie like to do? 
  2. What happens in the beginning of the story that upsets Louie? 
  3. Which emotion is red, explosive and mad? What kind of advice does this emotion give Louie? 
  4. Which emotion is heavy, blue, and still? What advice does this emotion give Louie? 
  5. Which emotion is yellow, tense, and tough? What advice does this emotion give Louie? 
  6. Which emotion is peaceful, bright and green? What advice does this emotion give Louie? 
  7.  Why is it good to understand your emotions? 
  8. What does the word “communicate” mean? (teacher note: keep it simple - you talk and I listen, I talk and you listen, then we make sure we understand each other)
  9. Can you name the emotion you are feeling right now?
  10. What does frustration mean?  What makes you frustrated?
