Before, During & After Reading

Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition: to be amazed at and/or curious about something that is pleasantly unexpected, beautiful, or  mysterious.  In short: Curiosity sparks endless discovery. Summary: The famous Cat in the Hat shares about the wonderful human body in poetry format as he guides readers on a tour through the inside-your-outside machine. We learn about the different functions of the brain, the skeletal system, the five senses, the circulatory system, the muscles, the lungs, the digestive system, and more. We learn that “you are very special, and your body is very clever.”   Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students demonstrate a greater understanding of the parts and functions of the human body and how amazing it is.
  2. This story can be linked to studies about the human body.
  Guiding Questions:
  1. Share about how different parts of your body are always busy.
  2. Would you like to visit the inside-your-outside machine? Why or why not?
  3. Show how big your brain is. Hint: the book tells you how.
  4. Talk about the different sizes of your bones.
  5. What are joints and what do they help you do?
  6. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood. Get an adult to show you how to feel the blood pumping through your body when you put your fingers on the inside of your wrist.
  7. Take a deep breath in and time how long you can go without taking a second breath. Does it surprise you when you see how often you need to take a breath?
  8. If you keep your spine straight without bending, can you pick up something on the floor?
  9. What parts of your body do you think are still working when you go to sleep?
  10. Just like a car needs gas, your body needs fuel. What kind of fuel helps your body the most? If you don’t know, ask a parent or grandparent.
