Definition: to be amazed at and/or curious about something that is pleasantly unexpected, beautiful, or mysterious. In short: Curiosity sparks endless discovery. Summary: Butterflies have delighted and intrigued children in many different parts of our world - there are approximately 20,000 species of this famous insect! “Butterfly House” is about a young girl who rescues a caterpillar from a Jay bird. She and her grandfather create an indoor habitat for it and their efforts provide the girl with the opportunity to observe the fascinating journey from caterpillar to pupa to butterfly. Thus begins a lifelong passion for the girl as she grows up and continues to provide gardens of butterfly-friendly flowers for her insect companions. Lesson Objectives:

Students will become more observant of and fascinated by the world of insects, especially butterflies.
This story can be linked to studies about the life span of butterflies and the importance of providing a habitat for them.

What kind of flowers do butterflies like best?
The larva creates a chrysalis - what happens inside of the chrysalis?
What happens when the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis?

If you have seen butterflies, describe what they look like. Do they look like the one in the story or are they different?
