Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition: Showing respect means to use words and actions that show we care about all people and things.    In short: Value others, honor differences. Summary: Little Nick, on a visit to the zoo with his parents, has a tantrum when he is told he can’t take the koala home. A talking monkey teaches Nick about steps to control his anger. As Nick follows the monkey’s advice, he is able to calm down. A parrot befriends Nick and helps him realize that his mother was right when she explained that the koala needed to stay at the zoo. When he apologizes to his mom, Nick feels good about himself because he was able to control his anger and show respect for those around him.     Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students are guided by their teacher to practice the steps that help them calm down when they’re angry. They memorize the steps and share about experiences they have with being strong in handling their anger.  
  2. Students understand that expressing anger can lead to disrespectful behavior; when they can manage their emotions, they are able to be respectful and respected. 
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. What made Little Nick so angry at the zoo? 
  2. How old do you think Nick is in the story? Did you think it was strange that he didn’t understand that he couldn’t take the koala home? 
  3. How did Nick feel when his mother said he couldn’t take the Koala home? What did angry feelings do to his brain, his throat, his eyes? 
  4. When Nick met the talking monkey, what advice did he get about getting rid of anger? 
  5. Did that work for Nick? 
  6. When Nick’s anger didn’t go away, he was advised to try something else - what did he try? Did it work?  
  7. When the parrot said to Nick, “maybe you’ve been wrong”, what did Nick realize? What did he do? 
  8. Think about a time when you were angry, especially when you were told “no”. Why were you angry? How did anger feel in your body? 
  9. When someone is angry with you, and you really didn’t do anything wrong, what do you do? What do you say?  Do you feel respected by that person or does their anger at you make you feel bad? 
  10. Nick felt better when he apologized to his mom. Do you feel better when you’re able to apologize after you’ve done something wrong?
