It provokes a sense of wonder and curiosity about the plants and animals that have lived in this vast canyon over the years of its development. Readers will enjoy a journey through time as they read the story of the grandest canyon in the world.    Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students will be stimulated to learn more about geological changes, and the forces of nature that shaped the natural world we live in today. 
  2. This story can be linked to studies about geology.

  1. Have you ever heard of or seen the Grand Canyon? Would you like to visit there sometime? 
  2. Describe how rivers carve canyons. 
  3. What did the author mean when he said the Grand Canyon is much more than just a hole in the ground? 
  4. What is the gorge - the lowest part - like? 
  5. Describe the “continental basement.”
  6. What did the Grand Canyon look like 1.2 million years ago? 
  7. Have you ever gone for a hike through a forest, in the mountains, by a river, on a beach? 
  8. Are there some interesting land or water forms near where you live? If you don’t know, ask someone or look it up. 
  9. Because the Grand Canyon is so impressive, people wanted to know how it came to exist. How do you think people discovered all this information about it? 
  10. Imagine what it was like before people lived where you live and describe what you see and hear.
