Definition: Service is doing something nice or helpful for someone else. Summary: The narrator takes readers on a tour of the services that helpers in the community provide.  Teachers, mail carriers, librarians, doctors, police officers, firefighters, garbage collectors, nurses, and many more are all “community superheroes who help us stay healthy, happy, safe and connected in our neighborhood.”   Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students become more observant of and respectful toward helpers in their community.
  2. Teachers can create opportunities for some of these community helpers to visit the classroom.
Guiding Questions:
  1. Have you ever seen your mail carrier deliver your mail? What would happen if we didn’t have services that bring mail and packages to us?
  2. What would your neighborhood look and smell like if there were no garbage collectors?
  3. What if you were sick and there were no doctors and nurses to take care of you?
  4. What if your neighbor’s house caught on fire and there were no fire trucks or firefighters to put out the fire?
  5. What if they had to close down the library because there was no one to help you check books out?
  6. Police officers keep our communities safe. What if you needed a police officer and no one came to help?
  7. What if you had to stay home from school because there were no teachers?
  8. Do you know anyone who is a community superhero?
  9. Have you ever done something to help people in your community?
  10. Is there a community helper job you’d like to be when you grow up?
