Before, During & After Reading

Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition : Service is doing something nice or helpful for someone else. Summary: Working towards change is the theme of this “anthem.” The examples and beautiful illustrations of how to contribute to a better world inspire readers to take action! When we don’t see change coming we can choose to sing, dream, hope, love, move, and learn from examples of activists who’ve made a difference. Most of all, let’s remember that “I’m the change I want to see!”    Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students are empowered to participate in acts of service. This book is a great way to begin a service project with your students.
  Guiding Questions:
  1. Look at the illustrations and name some of the change making activities you see in the pictures.
  2. What does the word “tolerance” mean to you? If you don’t know, ask someone.
  3. Instead of building a fence to keep people out, what do the kids build instead?
  4. The kids have a parade. What instruments can you name that are part of the parade?
  5. Change begins with me - what do you think this means?
  6. Ask your parents/grandparents to tell you a story of how they helped make a difference in people’s lives.
  7. Out of all the service projects you saw in the illustrations in this book, which one would you most like to do? If you don’t see one, choose something else you’d like to do to help others and do it!
  8. Share about what you’d like to be when you grow up, and how that job will help others.
  9. Choose someone in your family or at school or in your community who is doing something to make a change, and write them a thank you note. Don’t forget to deliver it!
  10. Name some jobs that people do that help make the world safer and better. Explain why the world is better because of what they do.

🌿   Virtue Connection: Service means using what you have been given to help others.
