Guiding Questions for Parents.

Definition: Integrity means being honest, and responsible and respectful all the time, whether or not people can see what you’re doing.  In short: Do the right thing, even when no one's looking.   Summary: Diggory skips doing his chores and tells a fib in order to get a milkshake. He thinks it doesn’t matter because “mom will never know.” At the library Diggory takes a book without checking it out and he breaks a promise about helping his brother practice soccer skills. Diggory continues to make mistakes - when he fails to study for an exam he copies his buddy’s paper and gets a perfect score. But cheating doesn’t feel good and Diggory starts to feel guilty.  Things get better when his brother Drew teaches him a new word - “integrity” and explains what it means.  “Integrity is when you always do the right thing. You do it from your heart even when no one is watching.” This prompts Diggory to rethink his actions, and he decides to “be a better me and see if I can get some of that integrity!”   Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students discuss the examples of integrity, when Diggory showed integrity and when he didn’t. They gain a more practical understanding of this virtue and it shows up in their behavior. 
  Guiding Questions: 
  1. What does Diggory’s mom tell him to do first before he can have a milkshake? Does he do what he promises? 
  2. Diggory takes a book out of the library without checking it out because he’s in a hurry. Why is that not okay? 
  3. What does Drew ask Diggory to help him with, and what excuses does Diggory give? 
  4. How do you think Drew feels when Diggory doesn’t help him? 
  5. Do you think Drew is a good brother to Diggory? Why or why not? 
  6. How does Drew explain integrity to Diggory? 
  7. Can you give two examples from the book about what actions Diggory finally took to show that he understands what integrity is? 
  8. Do you wish you could have a pet dragon? Describe what your dragon would look like and how it would behave.
  9. Share about a time when you showed integrity, especially a time when you did something good when no one was watching. 
  10. Ask a family member to share about a time when they showed integrity, especially if they did something good when no one was watching.
